The Maryport lighthouse in a storm the lighthouse was established in 1796. Indeed the harbour's history is long — the ruins of the Roman fort of Alvana stand in a nearby field. However, it was not until the second half of the 18th century that the town became of note and the major dock works began.

Groynes were originally installed along the coastline in 1915. Groynes control beach material and prevent undermining of the promenade seawall. Groynes interrupt wave action and protect the beach from being washed away by longshore drift. Longshore drift is the wave action that slowly erodes the beach.
"Yew Tree Farm is a fell farm, once owned by Beatrix potter and featured in the film Miss Potter, staring Renée Zellweger. Native Herdwick sheep and Belted Galloway cattle are reared on the 700 acre farm, on land that includes Tarn Hows and Holme Fell.
